Geography
Intent:
At Oakington Manor, our Geography curriculum provokes and provides answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world.
Through the teaching and learning of Geography, children grow a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. Children develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. Our teaching of Geography inspires in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives; promotes the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Our Geography curriculum inculcates knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable throughout their time at Oakington Primary, further education and beyond.
Curriculum Implementation:
In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in geography,
Geography at Oakington Manor Academy is taught in blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills of each blocked topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics throughout each year group across the school.
- At the beginning of each topic, children are able to convey what they know already as well as what they would like to find out (ENTRY POINT). This informs the programme of study and also ensures that lessons are relevant and takes account of children’s different starting points.
- Consideration is given to how greater depth will be taught, learnt and demonstrated within each lesson, as well as how learners will be supported in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion.
- Cross curricular outcomes in geography are specifically planned for, with strong links between geography and literacy lessons identified, planned for and utilised.
- The local area (Wembley Stadium, shops, religious places and Woodland area) is fully utilised to achieve the desired outcomes, with extensive opportunities for learning outside (Field work) the classroom embedded in practice.
Curriculum Impact:
The impact and measure of this is to ensure that:
- Outcomes in topic and literacy books evidence a broad and balanced geography curriculum.
- Books evidence children’s acquisition of identified key knowledge along with the use of vocabulary related to the topic.
- Children review their successes in achieving the WILF at the end of every session and identify their own target areas.
- Targets are also identified, shared and verified by teachers as necessary.
- Children record what they have learned comparative to their starting points at the end of every topic (EXIT POINT).
- Children develop a deep knowledge, understanding an appreciation of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context.
- International partner schools support and enriches our pupil’s geographical understanding, as well as their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
- European Day of language, class assemblies based on a geography topic, trips, workshops and projects (Brent Youth Project) extends children’s understating of the world around them and their place in it.
