RE & Collective Worship
Intent
At Oakington Manor Primary school our teaching of Religious Education (RE) ensures that children learn about and learn from religious and spiritual insights, beliefs and practices. They can articulate and appreciate their own beliefs and cultures and understand how these beliefs and cultures can have an impact on the people, local communities and the world around them. It also provokes children to ask challenging questions about the meaning of life, about their perception of right and wrong and what it means to be alive in the world today.
Our children live in a multi faith society and attend a multi faith school. They are taught Christianity and other major faiths practised around the world today such as Islam, Judaism Hinduism and Buddhism. We strongly believe that Religious Education has a particularly significant role to play in our children’s spiritual development. Lessons give children the chance to explore complex concepts such as life and death, personal identity and the relationships between people from different faith and societies. Collective worship timetabled via whole school assemblies, phase or year group assemblies provides time for personal silence and reflection - adding to our pupils’ spiritual development. School visits to places of worship exposes our pupils to art, literature and resources from different faiths developing the cultural dimension of RE. The teaching and Learning in RE, promotes our PSHCE curriculum and British values. Our children have a strongly embedded sense of what is ‘fair’ and follow the school’s policy in order to challenge racism, discrimination, offensive behaviour and bullying or any other kind of injustice. Our children appreciate each other’s differences and work together to make the school a safe and happy place they want to work in.
